Get In to the Point

If you are doing a presentation in your college or company or any other forums, definitely you might use presentation software like Microsoft PowerPoint or web-based software like Prezi or any other platform. Presentation software is handy that can be used with simple techniques to describe complex information and data. Let me share a few dos and dont's in a presentation.

Do's

  • Think carefully to draft the presentation.
  • Treat the presentation as a story.
  • Eye contact is essential; if you lose it, it's difficult to get the interest back.
  • Engage with the audience (asking questions, getting feedback & let them talk)
  • Slow down when you emphasize something; pauses are important.
  • Be visual (Use pictures and videos. If you are a better storyteller, you don't need many visuals)
  • Design the slides so that they are easy to see from the back of the room.
  • Better to go with 16:9 slide size rather than 4:3.
  • Be consistent in animations and transitions. (stick to a few animation types)
  • Have a summary and if you have a slide for Q&A it would be better.

Don'ts
  • Avoid reading the slides.
  • Avoid using complete sentences; Use in bullet forms.
  • Don't go against the slide; things in the slide should go with what you are talking about.
  • Avoid using too small or too big fonts; use readable moderate level fonts.
  • Don't use the same contrast for background and texts; dark color texts should go with light color background and vice versa.
  • Don't mention the acronyms and websites verbally; either you can show in the slide or you can spell it.
  • Don't hide behind the computer/lectern.
  • Don't use effects for texts; avoid the moving texts here and there unnecessarily.
  • Don't use corporate slide templates; create your own one or use free templates.

These are some tactics for you all to do the presentations effectively. Hopefully, I am willing to write more about the topics in the coming weeks. If you want to know a few basics of Microsoft PowerPoint, you can watch it from here on YouTube
